Company history

Draganfly Innovations was founded in Saskatoon, Canada in 1998 by Zenon Dragan and Christine Dragan.

Draganfly introduced its first commercial UAV systems in 1999 and released the first multi-rotor UAV equipped with an integrated camera system in 2001.

In May 2013, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Saskatchewan used a Draganflyer X4-ES equipped with a forward-looking infrared camera to locate a driver who had wandered from an overturned vehicle into a wooded area in near-freezing temperatures. The event was reported as the first known instance in which a small unmanned aircraft contributed to saving a human life, and the aircraft used in the rescue was later put on permanent display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

In July 2015, Draganfly was acquired by TRACE Live Networks, a U.S.-based technology firm, and continued operations under the TRACE co-founder, Cameron Chell.

Draganfly was incorporated in British Columbia in June 2018 as a vehicle to take the operating business public. Following a reverse-takeover transaction, the company's common shares began trading on the Canadian Securities Exchange under the symbol "DFLY" on November 5, 2019. They were subsequently quoted on the OTCQB Venture Market in the United States in January 2020. In April 2020, Draganfly acquired Dronelogics Systems Inc., a Canadian drone services and solutions integration company, as a wholly owned subsidiary. In January 2021, the company begun the process of applying to up-list its shares to the Nasdaq, citing potential benefits including improved stock liquidity and a broader institutional shareholder base; the shares subsequently began trading on Nasdaq under the ticker "DPRO."

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the company developed and tested "Pandemic drones," intended to assist with public health monitoring by analyzing crowd data and detecting physiological indicators.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Draganfly began supplying drones to Ukraine for humanitarian aid, medical supply delivery, search & rescue, reconnaissance, and humanitarian demining.

The company collaborated with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and Mass General Brigham (MGM) to launch a drone-delivery program for medical supplies in 2024. In the following year, Draganfly expanded its domestic United States manufacturing capacity and began selling its products to the US Department of Defense (DoD).
