Company history

The company was incorporated in Delaware in April 2008 as Auxogen Bioscience, Inc. It changed its name to Auxogyn, Inc. in 2010 and to Progyny, Inc. in 2015.

Before 2015, the company operated as a reproductive-medicine medical-device business. Its principal product was the Early Embryo Viability Assessment test, known as Eeva, which was used to help clinicians assess embryos during in vitro fertilization.

Progyny acquired Fertility Authority, an online fertility-information company, in March 2015 and began developing a fertility-benefits business alongside its medical-device operation. It launched its employer fertility-benefits service in 2016 with five clients. In January 2018, Progyny sold the Eeva business to Ares Trading, a subsidiary of Merck Serono, making fertility-benefits management its principal business. It introduced Progyny Rx, a pharmacy-benefits service, in 2018.

Progyny completed its initial public offering in October 2019. The company sold 6.7 million shares at $13 per share, while existing shareholders sold an additional 4.8 million shares. The Wall Street Journal described the offering as a first for the emerging generation of fertility-services startups. At the time of the company's IPO filing, Progyny was already profitable, with revenue of $103 million and a profit of $4 million during the first half of 2019.
